Can you help the Law Society? The debate on assistive technology and the SQE1

11 June 2021

We have been asked by the Law Society’s Lawyers with Disabilities Division if our mentors and mentees are interested in assisting with two matters on which they are working:

1.       Evidence that it would be appropriate for the SRA to offer assistive technology as a matter of course for the SQE1. Have you used assistive technology and/or an amaneunsis for examinations? How would you have felt if your assistive technology was not available? Further details of the issue can be found here https://www.lawgazette.co.uk/news/disabled-people-wilfully-excluded-in-new-super-exam/5108335.article

2.       Examples of reasonable adjustments that you have in place and which could feed into guidance for the profession (this will be done anonymously unless you state otherwise). They are particularly keen to learn about non-physical ones (e.g. changes to job role/targets, flexible working, personal assistants); and any tips on how to address perceived difficulties with adopting them.

Please email lawyerswithdisabilities@lawsociety.org.uk and they can arrange to speak with you on the phone if better.
